Old Skool Rave Bass Stab

on 11:00 AM

The old skool rave stab is perfect for those offbeat hits. Great for setting up the big drops in Dubstep. To follow this tutorial you can use any FM synth, hard or soft to make these sounds as long as it has three oscillators, sub oscillators and octave knobs.

Step 1

using Osc 1 select a square waveform and set the octave to about +2 or at around 6:32 as if your reading a clock. Just a little tweak.
gently increase the release on the amp and you should start to hear a familiar house type texture.

Step 2

using Osc 2 dial in the sub Osc until you get some warm bass tones that take you right back to the late 80's early 90's. You can also tweak the waveforms here to get some more unique sounds. This will round off the texture and top end of the sound, now it's time to add some beef.

Step 3

using Osc 3 select a triangle waveform and crank the volume right up. This will give the sound bottom end. You can use a sinewave here too. It depends on what your main bassline is all about at this point. Try to find a good balance so the triangle waveform can bring out some good old skool harmonics. For extra bass you can add in some of the sub Osc. Be careful though you don't want to interfere with the main bass.

Now track the sustain way down with a short attack and release. Tweak the decay to taste. The idea with this sound is to ride it short on the half note or right in between the kick and snare.

Have fun, If you used this tutorial feel free to send us some of your sound experiments.
